The Holy Spirit have to be understood in the christian view of a triune God, common referd to as the trinity. There is only one God, but in three different persons in the Godhead; The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. All with the same divine nature – all persons have always existed and was not created at a certain time. They are the source of all created things, and will never cease to exist. They are God, and all persons in the Godhead is worthy of our worship. (Gen. 1:26, 3:22, Matt. 28:19, 2 Cor. 13:14, Gal. 3:20, 1 Peter 1:2, 1 John 5:7)
The Holy Spirit is God (Acts 5:3-4), our Lord (2 Cor. 3:17), equal to the Son and the Father ( (Matt. 28:19)
As God, He is a divine person that:
Have a mind (Rom. 8:27),
will (Hebrews 2:4),
Feelings ( Isaiah 63:10, Eph. 4:30, Heb. 10:29, James 4:5),
Hear and Speaks (John 16:13, Acts 8:29),
And can be Jealous (James 4:5).
In the Gospel of John the Holy Spirit is even compered as a Father:
John 14:15-18:
If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
All this attribute is due to a person not a power.
The person the Holy Spirit, wants to enter into a fellowship with you. One of many verses that confirms that is James 4:5 which says that the Holy Spirit wants to have a fellowship with you so much that He will be jealous if he does not. This jealousy are compared in the same manner as between a husband and wife where the spouse does not want to share you with anyone else (Exo. 34:14, Jer. 3:8,14, Hos. 2, Eph. 5:25-32, 2 Cor. 11:2)
He is the third “person” in the Godhead. This is important because it is impossible to have a relationship with a “power”. Can you have a relationship with electricity, for example? Of course not. And if you believe that the Holy Spirit is only some kind of “power”, it will damage your personal intimate relationship that God wants us us to have through the Holy Spirit (John 14:17-18, Eph 2:18).
2 Corinthians 13:14 says,
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and God’s love and Communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.
Philippians 2:1
You can find consolation in Christ, comfort of love, you can seek fellowship of the Spirit, and find mercy with God.
The word communion and fellowship is the Greek word:
G2842
κοινωνία
koinōnia
koy-nohn-ee’-ah
partnership, that is, (literally) participation, or (social) intercourse, or (pecuniary) benefaction: – (to) communicate (-ation), communion, (contri-), distribution, fellowship.
From G2844
κοινωνός
koinōnos
koy-no-nos’
From G2839; a sharer, that is, associate: – companion, X fellowship, partaker, partner.
(Strong’s concordance)
That’s exactly what the Holy Spirit is. He is a person who wants to have fellowship with you. He is a social being. He wants to teach, lead and guide, reveal, and share His will and thoughts with you (Isaiah 63:10, John 16:13, 14:26, Acts 8:29, 13:2, Rom. 8:14 Eph. 4:30, Heb. 10:29, James 4:5),
God paid a very high price to have this “Koy-Nohn-ee-ah” fellowship with you, His Son, Jesus Christ.
